During the civil war he had a wide exposure to Surgery, and when the war ended, he left the country to specialize in the discipline. In the course of his training, he worked in many notable Teaching Hospitals abroad; Charring Cross, St. Bartholomew's, St. Mary's, St. Goethe's Epson District and St. Thomas' hospitals and other hospitals in and around London between 1972 and 1977.
While abroad, Dr. Obiora had further exposure to various medical disciplines including Urology, Orthopedics, Gastroenterology, Ontological Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Chest and Cardiac Surgery as well as General Surgery.
On returning home in 1977. he served as a Senior Registrar in the Burns and Plastic Surgical Unit at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, after which he worked at the peaediatric Surgery unit He later set up and headed the Trauma Unit of the Hospital.
Dr. Obiora is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, The West African College of Surgeons, Nigerian
Post Graduate Medical College, International College of Surgeons and a member of the World Orthopedic concern.
A keen sportsman in his secondary school days, he won honors in football and athletics, and showed more than a passing interest in art. He won a first class certificate in painting in the then Western Regional Festival of Arts. These days, Dr. Obiora's busy schedule rarely allows him the time to indulge in his old hobbies although he maintains a keen interest in gardening.
Among his many social interests, he is a member of Ikoyi Club He also reads voraciously. Dr. Obiora is happily married with six children.
